Controlled substances are regulated under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Drugs and other substances that are considered controlled substances under the CSA are divided into five schedules. A listing of the substances and their schedules is found in the DEA regulations at 21 CFR 1308.11-15.
Use of controlled substances requires registration with the DEA. See the DEA Forms & Applications webpage to begin the application process. Once the registration has been obtained, provide UNT Environmental Health & Safety with the registration number, issue date, and expiration date at rms.ehs@unt.edu.
Registration and compliance related to controlled substances are between the DEA and the purchaser/user. The Principal Investigator/DEA Registrant has the ultimate responsibility for ensuring proper acquisition, use, maintenance, security, accountability, and disposal of controlled substances. For guidance, see the DEA’s Practioner's Manual .
