Controlled substances are regulated by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) under the Controlled Substances Act. Drugs and other substances regulated under the Controlled Substances Act are divided into five schedules. The current list of controlled substances is available in 21 CFR 1308.11-15.

Before purchasing, receiving, storing, or using controlled substances for UNT research, teaching, or operational activities, the Principal Investigator or responsible registrant must obtain the appropriate DEA registration. After registration is obtained, provide Environmental Health and Safety with the registration number, issue date, and expiration date at rms.ehs@unt.edu.

Registration and compliance related to controlled substances are between the DEA and the purchaser or user. The Principal Investigator or DEA Registrant is responsible for proper acquisition, use, storage, security, accountability, recordkeeping, and disposal of controlled substances.

For DEA registration information, review DEA Forms & Applications. For research-related guidance, review the DEA Researchers's Manual. Contact Environmental Health and Safety before purchasing or using controlled substances if you have questions about UNT reporting expectations.
